Former Pentagon official: Assad's fall will weaken Houthis and Iran will sacrifice them

"The fall of the Assad regime in Syria will have a significant impact on the Houthis in Yemen," said "Michael Rubin," an American researcher and former Pentagon official.

"This event will greatly weaken Iran's logistical support for the Houthis, which could lead to the end of their political and military presence," Rubin said in a special statement to Al-Sahwa.

He said the IRGC will focus most on protecting the Iranian domestic front rather than supporting the Houthis in Yemen.

He noted that “Persian racism towards the Arabs and the willingness of the Iranians to withdraw from their previous alliances put the Houthis in an extremely vulnerable position.”

As for the possibility of Iran abandoning the Houthis as it did with the Assad regime, Rubin stressed that this scenario is very likely.

He recalled that during his meetings with Shiite authorities in Najaf and Karbala, he noticed how Iraqi Shiites ridiculed the Houthis and looked down on them, describing them as "ignorant"

"If Iran is forced to choose between supporting the Houthis or consolidating its influence in Iraq, it will choose Najaf and Karbala over Sana'a and Hodeidah," he said.

On the role of the international community in this matter, the American expert pointed out that the final decision is up to regional actors, especially Riyadh and Muscat.

The statements come at a time of rising regional tensions – due to the disintegration of Hezbollah and the fall of the Assad regime -  while eyes are on the Houthi militia in Yemen.
