A number of activists have called for stopping the Houthi militia's plan to demolish 500 archaeological buildings in the old city of Sana'a, which is included in the UNESCO Human Heritage List.
This includes the demolition of four of the most important handicraft markets in the city with the aim of establishing a sectarian shrine.
Intellectuals fear that the behavior of the Houthis, which targets the income sources of hundreds of families, will lead to the removal of the ancient city from the World Heritage List, as the militias aim to change the demographic composition of the hijacked Yemeni capital.
A statement signed by dozens of Yemeni writers, and activists expressed the Houthi militia's intention to destroy a number of homes and markets in the old city of Sana'a in order to construct a sectarian shrine, and they said that the group’s supervisors want to destroy the houses and shops that have existed in the heart of the city for decades.
