'Government offers foreign exchange to importers, importers pay taxes to Houthis! what is going on?'

A Yemeni parliamentarian  strongly lambasted the government for the "major irregularity" arising from the fact that the government in Aden offers foreign exchange to the country's importers while importers pay taxes to the rebel Houthi militia in Sana'a.

Abdul-Razzak Al-Hajri addressed the parliament in a debate held in Aden over the draft state budget saying , "There has been a major negligence in controlling revenues due to the absence of government" over the past years outside the country exacerbated by the fact that the government departments and provinces functioned during the government's absence independently at their own discretions as though they are "islands."

He said, "Is it reasonable brother finance minister that the government via the central bank keeps opening letters of credit for merchants to import goods in billions of riyals while the merchants keep paying taxes to the putschist [Houthi] militia? …We need an explanation. What is going on?"

He said, "When it comes to revenues. There are simple solutions that require no big efforts, but the government over the past year unfortunately bothered to do nothing."

He said, "The Tax Authority needs simply to take the decision and move the Large Taxpayers Department from [Houthi-held] Sana'a to the Aden."
