The Balhaf gas plant should be a lifeblood for Yemeni people at such a time, says Shabwa governor

The governor of Yemen's eastern Shabwa said on Tuesday the Balhaf natural gas liquefaction and export facility in his province " should be a lifeblood for the Yemeni people" at such difficult a time.

The biggest industrial project in Yemen has been stalled and used as a military base by the United Arab Emirates for years despite Yemen's catastrophic economic and humanitarian crisis and the need for hard currency to stop the depreciation of the country's currency.

Over the past years, Governor Mohammed Bin Edeiw - as other Yemeni officials and activists - has called on the UAE several times to de-militarize it and let the government resume exporting gas.

"We tell the UAE in clear terms: The Yemenis are a great people, builders of civilizations and countries… who left nothing in your country but good footprints. So why is all this (Emirati) hostility to Yemen, determination to create miseries for it, rebellions against its leadership ... and insistence of hurting it?" said Bin Edeiw in a series of tweets on Tuesday.

"Get your hands off the sore wounds of the Yemeni people, stop converting Yemen's resources from sources of livelihood to spots for rebellion," he said.

"The gas Balhaf gas exportation plant should be a lifeblood for the Yemeni people at such a time."
