Yemen religious scholars condemn burning of refugees in Houthi-held Sana’a

Yemen’s religious scholars have condemned the Houthi burning of refugees to death and injury in a detention facility in the Houthi-held Sana’a last week. In a statement, the Authority of Yemen’s Ulema (Religious Scholars) condemned the militia’s detention of the refugees in an attempt to “forcibly recruit them to the warfronts” against the Yemeni people, and the “mass burial of the victims in one of the cemeteries without the participation of relatives and friends.”

The scholars also condemned “stark hypocrisy that most the self-proclaimed humanitarian organizations showed by maintaining a suspicious silence” over the matter.

Houthi militants rounded up hundreds of refugees, mostly Ethiopian, in Sana’a to a detention  center to force them to join the militia’s warfronts against government-held cities. When the refugees declined, Houthi militants threw bombs to the detention facility igniting a fire that killed at least 44 and wounded 180 many of the critically.
