Yemen: Around 60,000 cancer patients at risk

Alsahwa Net-Medical sources in Sana’a said that the Houthis constant targeting of the medical sector threatens lives of 60,000 cancer patients.

The reported number of the cancer patients are scattered over the Houthis-held areas whereby almost one third of the total cases live in Ibb and Taiz.

The Houthis intervention in the management of medical center that provide free medications to the cancer cases, has largely impaired the action of those centers which put lives of the cases at greater risk, the sources said.

They confirmed that the Houthis have cut or reduced medication packages that used to be offered by specialized medical centers in Sana’a to cancer cases coming from Ibb, Taiz, Amran, Dhamar, Hajja and Raima.

Some cancer patients quoted by the London-based Asharq Al-Awsat daily Newspaper reported mismanagement of the cancer medical centers by the Houthis officials.

Medical personnel of cancer section at Al-Thawra Hospital in Sana’a said in conversations with the paper that every day, the ward of cancer receives scores of cases coming from various Houthis-held areas.

They said that the ward has been running unable to provide the needed healthcare to the patients due to increasing number of incoming cases amid poor resources and equipment.

Every day, cancer centers in the Houthis-held areas receive between 30 to 35 cases including men, women and children of different age groups, the medical personnel said.

Children and the below 40-year age group constitutes the biggest number of daily recorded cases.
