Gov’t condemns Houthis’ attacks on banks

Alsahwa Net- The government of Yemen condemned on Thursday constant Houthis’ attacks on banks and money exchange services in areas of their control.

It says that such acts confirm behavior of a criminal gang.

The Houthis stormed late this week the most widespread Al-Kuraimi Bank and shut down its headquarters in Sana’a and its branches in Hodeida, Ibb, Al-Dhala’. Later on, the Houthis allows the bank to reopen without clear reason for the shutdown.

Minister of Information, Muamar Al-Eryani said that looting and extortion actions by the Houthis against banks and money exchange services confirm that the Houthis skill only at murder, intimidation and coercion.

The Houthis steal about 30 percent of money transfers coming from the government-held areas into areas of their control, according to Al-Eryani.

He said that this systemic stealing of remittances amidst suspension of monthly payments to the public servants is a criminal act and a mass punishment the Houthis impose on the Yemeni people.

He said that the Houthis’ looting of public funds and collection of illegal taxes on businesses have extended to attacks on banks and money exchange services to disturb remaining lines of citizens’ livelihoods.

The attack on Al-Kuraimi bank which shocked the people has raised concerns among economists who said that such acts will have bad consequences on the private sector.
