Houthis privatize public education

Alsahwa Net- Local sources in Sana’a said that the Houthis rebels began privatization of the public education in areas of their control.

The sources who spoke to Alsahwa Net, said that the Houthis imposed exorbitant tuition on students of public schools whereby each primary education student must pay YR65,000 ($108) and every secondary school student must pay YR95,000 ($158).

Belqees Female Public school in the capital Sana’a is among the schools that were added to the privatization program.

The sources said that Belqees School was changed into a private school for male students.

The school was the first female school in Sana’a that was built following the 26 September revolution in 1962 against the imamates’ rule in north Yemen.

The Houthis have been damaging the public education since they seized the capital Sana’a in late 2014 whereby, they have been implementing systemic indoctrination of their extreme ideology among the school children.

And now the recent privatization of the public education will result into huge school dropout as the poverty among the population increased from 50 percent prior the fighting to 75 percent in 2020.

The Houthis also suspended in 2016 the monthly payments to over 135,000 public teachers in provinces of their control and hindered the government efforts to resume monthly payments to public servants in the Houthis-held areas.
