Human rights organization calls for release of detainees in Aden

Alsahwa Net- Sam Organization for Rights and Liberties expressed on Wednesday its deep concern to increasing human rights violations in Aden being committed by militants of Southern Transitional Council (STC).

In a statement, the organization said it reported over 120 human rights violations during the past three months in the STC-held city.

It indicated that the human rights situation deteriorated significantly in Aden with mounting number of violations.

Reported violations in Aden included arbitrary arrests of over 50 civilians in Aden, death of a 20-year detainee; Hussein Al-Arashi in prison under torture, return of assassinations and forcible displacement of northern citizens.

It called on the de facto authority of Aden [the STC] to immediately release Dr. Taher Al-Qubati, a 47-year detainee who was arrested on 20 July 2020 at the Al-Alam checkpoint, east entrance of Aden by the STC militants while returning from Sayoun of Hadhramout.

Al-Qubati who holds a PhD degree in Analytical Chemistry is an assistant professor of the same subject of Sabr College in Taiz.

It called on the STC to respect the international human rights law and article no. 9 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights which has been ratified by Yemen.

The article says that “Everyone has the right to liberty and security of person. No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest or detention. No one shall be deprived of his liberty except on such grounds and in accordance with such procedure as are established by law.”

“Anyone who is arrested shall be informed, at the time of arrest, of the reasons for his arrest and shall be promptly informed of any charges against him.”
