UN warns about much worse impacts of COVID-19 in Yemen

Alsahwa Net-The United Nations (UN) Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, said on Friday that the COVID-19 has aggravated the humanitarian situation in Yemen with over 24 million people need humanitarian aids.

Guterres said this during a briefing he made on the new polices of the Arab region amid the spread of coronavirus.

He said that Yemen hosts about three percent of the total refugees in the Arab region.

Yet, the country’s two million- internally displaced persons form about 14 percent of the total displaced people in the region, Guterres said.

He indicated that the food insecurity and supply shortage are projected to worsen more if the conflict in Yemen remains unresolved.

About 11 million people in Yemen were classified as food insecure-people before the spread of the COVID-19.

Despite those risks, “COVID-19 can be a moment for resolving long-standing conflicts & addressing structural weaknesses in the Arab region,” Guterres said.
