Saudi Arabia demands again UNSC take firm action to avert oil spill in the Red Sea

Alsahwa Net-The Saudi cabinet renewed on Tuesday its demand to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to take firm measures to avert disastrous oil spill that might take place in the Red Sea as a result of the floating Safer tanker off Hodeida.

The cabinet discussed threats imposed by the decaying tanker due to its possible rupture or explosion that will bring an environmental, economic and humanitarian disaster to Yemen and nearby countries.

The cabinet renewed condemnation of irresponsible acts by the Houthis that brought this condition of the Safer tanker.

For its part, the Ethiopian government affirmed on Tuesday on the need to resolve the floating Safer tanker and warned about a catastrophe that threatens the Red Sea countries.

Yemen’s Safer tanker has been docking off Ras Issa port of Hodeida in the Red Sea with no repairing since the Houthis took control of Hodeida in October 2014.

The 1.4 million barrels of oil on board of the tanker is expected to spill into the Red Sea waters any time due to corrosion of the tanker’s body.
