UN: COVID-19 fatality rate is alarming high in Yemen

Alsahwa Net-The United Nations (UN) said on Monday that COVID-19 fatality is alarming high in Yemen.

The increase of deaths is taking place amid funding shortfall required to support response to the epidemic, the UN says.

The UN aid agencies requested $385million in funding to support COVID-19 operations in the country.

Yet, as of Monday's morning 20 July, the UN COVID-19 operations in Yemen received only $55 million which is only 14 percent of the actual need, according to the Spokesperson for Secretary-General António Guterres, Stephane Dujarric,

Dujarric said this during a press conference where he talked about national issues in several countries including Yemen.

As of 20 July, 1,610 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in Yemen, including 445 deaths in the government-held areas, according to Dujarric.

He said that fatality rate of the disease in Yemen exceeds 27 percent of the infected cases, which is five times the global average.

“Actual infection numbers are likely to be much higher, as testing materials are in short supply,” said Dujarric.
