EU demands release of detained journalists

Alsahwa Net-The European Union (EU) delegation to Yemen called on Monday on the Houthis to immediately release detained journalists.

This was pronounced in a statement by the EU heads of Mission to Yemen released on Monday.

“The EU Heads of Mission to Yemen have witnessed with increasing and deep concern the severe attacks on press freedom, including on the lives and rights of journalists, over the past months in Yemen,” the statement read.

It called on all parties to immediately release all detained journalists in Yemen, including Akram Al-Walidi, Abdelkhaleq Amran, Hareth Hamid and Tawfiq Al-Mansouri who have been sentenced to death by the Houthis.

It indicated that the uncontrolled spread of Covid-19 makes the release of detained journalists all more urgent.

“There has been a worrying increase in the issuing of death sentences, arbitrary detention, intimidation and even assassination of journalists in Yemen,” the statement read.

It said that such actions constitute unacceptable attacks on the principle of press freedom.

It said that perpetrators of the murder of Nabil Hassan Al-Quaiti must be brought to justice.

It called on all actors in Yemen to respect freedom of expression, as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and in the Yemeni constitution.

“A free, diverse and thriving media is essential for the people, the peace and future development in Yemen,” the statement concluded.
