UNSC to discuss Safer tanker next Wednesday

Alsahwa Net- Upon a request by the Yemeni government, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) will hold a separate session on Wednesday 15 July to discuss the Safer Supertanker docked off Hodeida in the Red Sea.

The Yemeni Foreign Ministry sent a letter to the UNSC demanding separation of the Safer tanker issue from discussions of other political files and take strict measures to avert a possible catastrophe.

Yemen’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Abdullah Al-Saadi, said that the UNSC responded to Yemen’s request on separation of the issue of the tanker from other topics to resolve the problem separately.

In a quote to the London-based Asharq Al-Awsat daily Newspaper, Al-Saadi said that the UNSC received the request with a high interest and that the issue will witness new developments in the upcoming week towards reaching suitable measures.

He said that his home’s government had been frequently warning the UNSC about looming environmental and economic catastrophe in case the oil spilled out of the safer tanker which will eventually lead to devastating effects on Yemen and the region.

He indicated that the Houthis rejected all the UN proposals presented by the UN Special Envoy to Yemen on resolving the issue, which forced the government to address several letters to the UNSC and the UN Secretary General caution against likely environmental and humanitarian disaster.

Al-Saadi said that the Safer tanker is merely a humanitarian and economic issue and demanded the UNSC to assume responsibility and take urgent measures.

He added that the Houthis had even rejected a separated proposal by the UN Special Envoy to Yemen on the issue.

“The Houthis use the Safer tanker and sufferings of Yemeni people to extort political and military advantages from the government without care to bad consequences ensued from their acts,” Al-Saadi said.

He appreciated the UN for willing to provide technical support to repair the tanker and unload the oil to prevent the imminent catastrophe.
