PERSGA: Possible Safer oil spill in the Red Sea might halt Hodeida Port operations

Alsahwa Net-The Regional Organization for the Conservation of the Environment of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden (PERSGA) held on Monday the Houthis fully responsible to any damage that the maritime environment of the region might sustain due to oil spill from the Safer tanker.

The Houthis have persistently banned the repair service to the tanker which has been unchecked since the Houthis took over of Hodeida early 2015.

The Secretary General of the PERSGA, Ziad Abu Ghararah, stated that the condition of the tanker remains unknown and it is hard to forecast what will happen amid the constant rejection by the Houthis on permitting technical teams to check the tanker for doing the required maintenance

Abu Ghararah warned against a possible environmental disaster due the likely oil spill from the tanker docked off Ras Issa Port, north Hodeida.

He said that spill of over one million barrels of oil looms as a result of the tanker’s corrosion.

He said that the damaged body of the tanker will cause oil spill which will consequently lead to an unprecedented disaster.

He affirmed that such incident will seriously affect the rich biological diversity of Yemen’s islands including kamaran Island.

Operations of the Hodeida port and Al-Saleef port will be at risk of being halted for several months when the oil spill happens, Abu Ghararah said.

In general, the spill will lead to bad impacts on the Red Sea environment and the world maritime navigation, according to Abu Ghararah.

He indicated that the PERSGA held meetings with the member states of the organization to forecast possible scenarios on how to deal with the problem.

Established in 1995, the PERSGA is an intergovernmental body dedicated to the conservation of the coastal and marine environments found in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aqaba, Gulf of Suez, Suez Canal, and Gulf of Aden surrounding the Socotra Archipelago and nearby waters.

The PERSGA’s member states include Djibouti, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.
