UN: Death sentences against journalists must be overturned

Alsahwa Net- The United Nations (UN) Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, said on Tuesday that death sentences by the Houthis against the four Yemeni journalists must be overturned.

The Houthis ruled last April four detained journalists to death following their five-year illegal detention.

Guterres voiced his call in a letter he responded to a previous address from the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate (YJS) on the issue.

He said that he felt appalled as the sentenced journalists were tortured and denied basic human rights.

Guterres said that the UN opposes the use of the capital punishment in all circumstances.

He indicated that he urged the Houthis to take prompt actions to overturn the death sentences against the detained journalists and to release them along with all the other detained journalists.

He added that the death of Nabil Al-Qaiti in Aden on 2 June 2020 was another tragic incident that represents nature of the high risks the journalists in Yemen take to do their jobs.

Around 38 Yemeni journalists were killed in Yemen since 2015 amid growing persecution against the media professionals, according to the YJS.

Guterres said that he and his special envoy to Yemen will continue calling all parties in Yemen to ensure the freedom of expression and the right to access information.
