Social media campaign in solidarity with detained journalists

Alsahwa Net-A social media campaign launched on Tuesday in solidarity with detained journalists in the Houthis-run prisons.

The campaign coincides with the anniversary of the Yemeni Press Day which marks 9 June of every year.

Organizers of the campaign used the hashtag#YemeniPressDay and called on media outlets, political leaders, journalists and activists to participate effectively in the campaign for the sake of the human rights.

A news release by leaders of the campaign said that the Yemeni Press Day marked this year while the Yemeni journalists continue paying a heavy price for doing their job.

The press freedom in Yemen sustained a significant setback following a bloody rebellion by the Houthis in late 2014.

Organizers of the campaign urged social media users to express their solidarity with the abducted journalists in the Houthis-run prisons.

Some of the detained journalists have been in confinement for the sixth year in a row and four of them were sentenced to death last April by the Houthis militia.

The campaign is intended also to highlight reporters whose monthly payments were suspended, or they lost their jobs as consequences of the Houthis’ rebellion.

Media outlets and media professionals affiliated to the Islah party were literally damaged in various parts of the country.
