Gov’t holds STC accountability to worsening health situation in Aden

Alsahwa Net- The government held on Friday the separatists in Aden known as the Southern Transitional Council (STC) accountability to deteriorating health situation in the city following surge of the COVID-19 cases.

Undersecretary of the Health Ministry, Abdulraqeeb Al-Haideri said in a statement quoted by the London-based Asharq Al-Awsat daily Newspaper that irresponsible acts taken by the STC hindered the government to respond to the spread of COVID-19 in Aden.

He explained that the health ministry set up a preventive response scheme to counter the COVOD-19 in the government held areas.

However, local health authorities in Aden failed to implement the government’s COVID-19 response strategy because of impairment ensued by the STC’s declaration of self-administration of south Yemen, according to Al-Haidari.

The situation in Aden requires a collective large-scale response to deal with several epidemics that spread in combination with appearance of several confirmed COVID-19 cases.

Drains flooding and wastewater overflow down streets caused by heavy rains that hit Aden in mid-April created a perfect recipe for the reemergence of epidemics including Chikungunya, cholera, malaria and dengue fever.

He indicated that the government has been able to implement health measures smoothly in other areas other than Aden.

Currently, the government supports the health offices and other related public departments to repair the water grid and remove the stagnant wastewater to reduce the mosquito breeding sites.

The COVID-19 spread in Yemen represents a nightmare as the country has been at war since 2015 amid worse outbreaks of other epidemics and a collapsing health system.

The situation is worsening by applying security methods in dealing with the cases of COVID-19 in the Houthis-held north Yemen, Al-Haideri said.

“The Houthis militia deals brutally with reported COVID-19 cases which made several cases to conceal their health problems,” he said.

He added that the Houthis deal irresponsibly with the COVID-19 spread by hiding information about number of the infected cases.
