Gov’t diplomat: Houthis’ cover-up on COVID-19 cases will exacerbate the situation

Alsahwa Net- Yemen’s Ambassador to Jordan, Ali Al-Amrani, said on Tuesday that the Houthis’ cover-up of truth on the number of COVID-19 cases in Sana’a will aggravate the situation.

He indicated that international aid organizations provide available COVID-19 support according to the number of reported cases.

The Houthis rebels who control the densely populated north Yemen, reported first coronavirus case in Sana’a on Tuesday 5 May, a Somali citizen found dead in hotel.

However, the total government- reported cases increased on the same day to 21 cases among them three deaths since 10 April.

The government reported on Tuesday nine new cases, one in Hadhramaut and eight in Aden.

The United Nations (UN) Humanitarian Coordinator, Lise Grande, suggested late last month that the local health authority might hide information on the spread of COVID-19.

“There’s no time to lose. People have to be informed accurately and quickly about what is happening, so they can do what’s necessary to protect themselves and their families,” said Grande.

For his part, Al-Amrani said that people do not apply protective measures as a result of the cover-up.

He indicated that people have yet to commit to physical distancing, avoiding social gatherings and wear face masks to prevent the infection spread.

He indicated that the Houthis follow suit of the Imamates’ rule on dealing with national health disasters.

The Imamates who ruled north Yemen between 1918 to 1962, had been notorious for indifference to health concerns and national disasters.

The Houthis have been accused of hiding information about the real number of the coronavirus in north Yemen whereas private medical sources warn against worsening situation as a result of the concealment.
