YJS values struggling of Yemeni journalists, renews calls for release of detained journalists

Alsahwa Net-Journalists around the world including the Yemeni journalists celebrated on Sunday the World Press Freedom Day amid worldwide hostile environment to the press freedom and the freedom of expression.

The Yemeni Journalists Syndicate (YJS) congratulated every Yemeni journalist and valued their struggle for their work.

Reporters in Yemen continue their work amid high risks on their lives and freedoms.

In August 2019, the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said that at least 20 Yemeni journalists were victims of enforced disappearance since the start of the fighting in 2015.

The Houthis militia which controls the densely populous north Yemen, ruled on 11 April 2020 four detained journalists to death over their reporting work.

“The YJS marks this day while our fellow journalists are in detention and vulnerable to cruel treatment,” the YJS said in a statement.

“We renew our calls to all the warring parties to release all the journalists and cease persecution and crackdown against heroes of the fourth authority,” the YJS said.

It renewed its rejection to the death sentence against the detained journalists in the Houthis-run prions who have been in detention since 2015.

It said that such rulings are unfair, illegal and confiscate the right to life.

It said that such politicized sentences must be overturned and called on the local and international organizations concerned with the freedom of expression to support its efforts for revoking these rulings.

It indicated that the World Press Freedom Day is marked to remind governments with the need to respect their commitments towards the press freedom.

It highlighted that its joint efforts with the International Federation of journalists failed so far to convince the government to pay monthly salaries of the public media professionals in the Houthis-held areas.

It renewed calls to the government to pay monthly wages of all journalists in Yemen and to assume responsibility on this aspect.

It added that the World Press Day is also marked to celebrate principles of the press freedom and to defend the media outlets against attacks.
