IFJ calls for investigation into death of Yemeni journalists

The IFJ has called for independent investigation into the death of investigative reporter Mohammed al-Absi in Yemen.

It welcomed calls by Irina Bokova, the Director-General of UNESCO, for a thorough independent inquiry into the death of al-Absi.

UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova called on the authorities to launch an independent investigation into the death of Mohammed Al-Absi  and bring the perpetrators to justice.

UNESCO cited on its site that al-Abasi was poisoned as an autopsy has reportedly shown.

Al-Absi was a prominent Yemeni investigative journalist said to have been investigating oil companies owned by Houthi leadership. He had published a series of reports over the past years, focused on corruption, particularly in the energy industry and in relation to arms deals.

One of the published documents concerns Houthi spokesman Mohammed Abdul Salam, alleging that he owns an oil company that sells on the black market in Houthi-controlled areas.
