Gov’t official demands ICC investigate Houthis’ crimes against female detainees

Alsahwa Net- The Minister of Information, Muammar Al-Eryani demanded the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate crimes committed in the Houthis-held areas against female detainees in secret prisons and bring perpetrators to justice.

This demand followed horrific stories reported on Wednesday by the Associate Press (AP) where released female detainees and survivors described physical and psychological torture and rape carried out by the Houthis militants against abducted women in secret detention centers.

“We call on the ICC to investigate these crimes and bring perpetrators into justice as war crimes and crimes against humanity,” said Al-Eryani.

“We call on the international community and women protection organizations to intervene to stop these violations and pressure Houthis to release the female abductees,” he said.

He explained that the AP’s report sheds light on the most heinous crimes committed by Houthis militia, which the government have frequently warned about.

The report details abduction of women and forcibly disappearing them in secret prisons because of their opinions and political and humanitarian activities, according to Al-Eryani.

He said that the report documented testimonies by survivors who managed to escape from the Houthis-controlled areas on “how they were assaulted, physically and psychological tortured, sexually harassed and raped.”

The report published a testimony by one female survivor who was scheduled for execution, but the death order was called off in the last minute which signifies unprecedented crackdown against the Yemeni, Al-Eryani said.
