Gov’t welcomes UNSC statement on ceasefire

Alsahwa Net-Yemen welcomed on Sunday the UN Security Council (UNSC) statement on Yemen which supports the two-week ceasefire declared by Saudi-led coalition.

The Saudi led coalition declared last Wednesday a two-week unilateral ceasefire that began on Thursday 9 April in response to the UN Secretary General’s call for ceasefire in Yemen.

The government of Yemen headed by President Abd Rabo Mansour Hadi has already accepted the UN ceasefire call and called on the UNSC to exercise pressures on the Houthis to abide by the truce.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that President Hadi directed the government to accept the ceasefire in response to the UN ceasefire call to counter risks of the coronavirus spread.

It indicated that the ceasefire acceptance is intended to prepare the ground for peace talks resumption in line to the three agreed references.

Yet, the ministry condemned the ongoing military escalation by the Houthis and their rejection of the UN ceasefire call.

It called on the international community and the UNSC to exercise pressures on the Houthis militia to respond to the UN ceasefire call.

It held the Houthis accountable to consequences of their defiance to the peace efforts as the country already reported the first confirmed case of the COVID-19.
