Houthis hinder release of prisoners

Alsahwa Net- The Yemeni government said that the Houthis refuse implementation of the prisoners’ exchange agreement that was agreed on last mid-February.

Undersecretary of the Human Rights Ministry and member of the government’ representatives to the Negotiation Committee on detainees and prisoners, Majed Fadhayel said that while the government is determined to release all prisoners and detainees, the Houthis respond with procrastination.

He indicated that the government remains committed to the phased release of detainees that includes initial release of 1,420 detainees and prisoners until reaching the full exchanged release.

He added the government responded positively to proposals came from the Office of the UN Special Envoy to Yemen on details of the exchanged lists.

Fadhayel renewed the government’s call to the UN Special Envoy to Yemen to exercise pressures on the Houthis to release immediately all prisoners and detainees particularly those suffering diseases, elderly detainees and detained journalists.

For his part, Abdulmajeed Sabra, a lawyer and human rights activist, said that the Houthis do not show any positive sign to the UN calls for release of detainees amid risks of the COVID-19 outbreak.

He added that the Houthis ignore calls by the detainees’ relatives to free their relatives to avert the spread of the coronavirus.

Sabra wrote a post on his Facebook page that the Houthis have not even implemented release orders by their affiliated prosecution that ruled freedom of two detained journalists.
