UN scales up efforts to resume Yemen peace talks amid Coronavirus threats

Alsahwa Net- The United Nations (UN) said on Thursday that it is working with the western powers to push Yemen’s two warring parties towards new peace talks to end the war that left millions of people vulnerable to diseases.

The UN said that it uses the coronavirus threat to convince the parties in Yemen to go to peace talks and end the fighting.

The UN has already sent a proposal for the new peace talks to the internationally recognized government, the Saudi-led coalition that supports the government and the Iran-backed Houthis who controls the capital Sana’a and most of the major cities according to UN sources.

Office of the UN Special Envoy to Yemen, Martin Griffiths, said on Thursday that Griffiths has been engaging in talks with the parties to reach a nationwide ceasefire.

The proposed ceasefire is to halt all hostile acts including aerial, ground and naval attacks.

The urgent resumption of the political process aims to resolve conflict and foster joint efforts to counter the threat of COVID-19, according to Griffiths’ office.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said that Yemen has reported no confirmed case of the COVID-19 but other diseases such as cholera, dengue fever and malaria are rampant.
