Houthis suspend inter-governorate movement to government-held areas

Alsahwa Net- Using the pretext of coronavirus outbreak control, the Houthis militia has suspended inter-governorate movement to and from the government-held territory.

The Houthis obligate passengers coming from the government-held territory to spend 14-day quarantine before being permitted to cross into the Houthis-held areas.

However, some passengers were permitted to cross into the Houthis-held areas after paying bribes to the Houthis security officials.

The action opens a new intimidation window for the Houthis to increases suffering of Yemeni citizens, passengers say.

Mohammed K., a resident of Sana’a who spoke to Alsahwa Net said that he is now unable to visit his parent in the government held Taiz city following Houthis’ suspension of inter-governorate movement.

“I used to go through 12-hour travel to reach the besieged Taiz city. However, I’m now in a big prison following the Houthis’ decision on movement ban,” the citizen who requested anonymity said.

Saleem G. another citizen who spoke to Alsahwa Net, said that the Houthis politicize the coronavirus prevention measures by imposing inter-governorate movement to the government-held areas.

The government has already suspended incoming and outgoing flights to Yemen’s ports as a preventive measure to control spread of the infectious disease.

Saleem says that the Houthis ban of movement to and from the government-held areas is meaningless because Yemen’s ports are already closed against all flights.

“If the Houthis were serious about citizens’ safety, they would have had taken preventive measures against cholera outbreak,” Saleem said.

The Houthis took no similar action when the country saw large-scale cholera outbreak in 2018.

Large number of passengers were trapped this week at crossing checkpoints into the Houthis-held areas.

Local sources and passengers say that the inter-governorate Houthis-manned checkpoints extort passengers using the pretext of coronavirus outbreak control.
