Demands for immediate release of abducted rector

Alsahwa Net- The University of Science and Technology (UST) teaching staff demanded on Monday immediate release of the university’s rector, Hamid Aqlan.

The Houthis abducted Aqlan again last Thursday following less than one week of his release from previous arbitrary detention in late January.

The teaching staff said in a statement that “Aqlan was not released despite appeals for his release and reversal of the Houthis’ recent actions against the UST.

The Houthis seized the UST on 25 January, detained Aqlan and designated one of their affiliates as a new rector for the university.

The teaching staff blamed the Houthis-run Ministry of Higher Education for taking no action towards Aqlan’s release.

They held the Ministry of Higher Education in Sana’a responsibility to act for Aqlan’s release.

They appealed to the academic personnel to stand with their demand for instant release of the abducted rector and to respect independence of private academic institutions.

The Houthis who seized the capital Sana’a in late September 2014 have also changed the public education into a platform for promoting their extreme Shiite ideology.

They also confiscated or shut down private businesses including the UST which is the premier private university in Yemen.
