Government demands UN investigation on stolen public funds

Alsahwa Net- The Yemeni Minister of Information, Muammar Al-Eryani, demanded on Wednesday the United Nations (UN) Panel of Experts to investigate fate of Yemen’s stolen public funds that the Houthis looted from the Central Bank of Yemen (CBY) following their seizure of the capital Sana’a in late 2014.

The stolen funds include foreign cash reserves and billions of the local currency, Al-Eryani said.

He indicated that during the same period, the Houthis have also looted money of the Public Pension Fund.

At present, the Houthis continue stealing the public revenues from tax and customs collection and Zakat (alms), Al-Eryani said.

The latest report by the UN Panel of experts on Yemen, has confirmed stealing of public funds by the Houthis.

“The panel of experts’ report has exposed with evidence samples of money laundering transactions, illegal seizure of the public revenues and confiscation of assets by the Houthis to finance their war against the Yemenis,” said Al-Eryani.

He explained that the report has affirmed that the Houthis leaders used the stolen money for private capital investment abroad amid suspension of monthly payments to the public workers in the Houthis-held areas and unprecedented levels of famine, poverty and spread of diseases.

Al-Eryani called on the international community to support the legitimate government to impose the state of rule on the entire territory of Yemen.

He reaffirmed that the state is the only body that guarantees protection of public and private rights, retention of public funds and public service to everyone.
