UN: Attack on Marib hospitals halts health service to thousands of displaced people

Alsahwa Net- Two hospitals in Majzr district of Marib sustained serious damages due to multiple attacks on Friday 7 February, a statement by the United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said.

The Houthis-attack on the two hospitals came shortly after previous attack targeted a densely- populated area with local residents and displaced people.

Several medical wards including the intensive care unit, physiotherapy ward, and the pharmacy of the Al-Jafra Hospital were badly damaged, according to the OCHA.

The Saudi field hospital which is a mobile clinic was also structurally damaged and one first responder was wounded.

The ongoing fighting in the area made the two hospitals to shutdown to retain safety of the medical workers.

“This is a completely unacceptable breach of the international humanitarian law,” said the UN Humanitarian Coordinator to Yemen, Lise Grande.

“It is terrible that facilities upon which thousands of people depend to survive have been badly damaged,” said Grande.

The two hospitals that are located about 75 kilometers north west Marib city, provide health services to around 15,000 people, majority of them displaced people.

“The health sector has been hit very hard during this war,” said Grande.

“Preventing further damage and helping to rebuild are some of our highest priorities,” she said.

The fighting in Marib and other nearby governorates which intensified in mid-January, scattered up to 4,673 families across Marib, Sana’a and Al-Jawf.

Many of those fleeing frontline areas were displaced for the second time and have exhausted all their resources, the OCHA statement said.
