UN experts: Houthis obtained advanced weapons in 2019

Alsahwa Net- The Houthis obtained in the past year advanced new weapons and some of these weapons have capabilities similar to weapons produced in Iran, a report by the United Nations (UN) Panel of Experts said.

Land-cruise missiles and Delta-design drones are among the new reported weapons that the Houthis have obtained in 2019, according to the report.

These weapons reached hands of the Houthis via two main routes: overland via Oman and via the sea through the southern coast of Yemen, the report confirmed.

Smuggling of commercially available arms that include drone engines, machineguns, grenades, anti-tank missiles and advanced cruise-missiles represents a violation to the UN embargo on Yemen, the report noted.

Yet, the report said that the experts failed to obtain evidence on Iran’s involvement in the weapons’ delivery to the Houthis.

Analysts say that the UN report suggests direct affiliation by the Houthis to Iran and their efforts to impede peace process in Yemen.

They said that the continuous flow of arms to the Houthis in such pattern will prolong the Yemen crisis.

In this regard, the experts found no evidence on the Houthis’ claim of being behind attacks against the Saudi oil installation on 14 December 2019 despite their recognition of the incident.

All parties still largely commit violations to the international humanitarian law with no liability, the report said.

It indicated that the Yemeni government, Saudi Arabia, the Houthis and the United Arab Emirate (UAE)-affiliated forces continue arrests, arbitrary detention, forcible disappearance and torture of detainees.
