UN condemns attacks against international organizations in Al-Dhala’

Alsahwa Net-The Under-Secretary -General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Mark Lowcock condemned on Monday attacks targeted premises of three international humanitarian aid organizations in Al-Dhala’.   

Lowcock said that on 21 and 22 of December, unknown gunmen attacked offices of three international organizations in Al-Dhala’ using rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs).

The attacks wounded one person and caused property damage, according to a statement released by Lowcock.  

He said that the attacks forced 12 international organizations to suspend their assistance programs in Al-Dhala’ which will affect 217,000 local residents.

“I condemn these attacks unreservedly. I urge a thorough investigation, and I express my appreciation to the Government of Yemen for the work they have begun in this regard,” said Lowcock.

“These events represent an alarming escalation in the risks faced by humanitarian workers in Yemen,” he said.

He affirmed that he remains concerned by “the continuation of media campaigns in parts of Yemen that spread rumors and incitement against aid operations.”

Three international organizations that included Oxfam, Mercy Corps and ACTED, suspended their operations in Al-Dhala’ following attacks on their premises.
