Yemen: no progress yet on Stockholm agreement

Alsahwa Net- Yemen’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), Abdullah Al-Sa’adi said on Friday that the Stockholm Agreement is nearly one year old with no progress yet on implementation of the agreement.

Al-Sa’adi voiced this during his address to the UN Security Council (UNSC) session on Yemen which took place on Friday

“Implementation of the Hodeida agreement [Stockholm agreement] particularly handing over the city of Hodeida to the local security forces, withdrawal from Hodeida city and ports and opening humanitarian passages will form a significant trust-building measure and a real indicator towards a sustainable peace,” said Al-Sa’adi.

He indicated that cancelation of the Stockholm agreement will not benefit the political process in Yemen but will solely reward the rebels for not implementing their part of the agreement.

He affirmed that the Houthis’ non-compliance to the ceasefire in Hodeida and their constant military escalation requires clear condemnation and a strict stance.

He added that the Houthis’ breaching to the Stockholm agreement demonstrates that they are not ready yet for the peace and do not care to the large-scale humanitarian crisis caused by the ongoing war.

He appreciated the Saudi efforts that primarily contributed to the signing of Al-Riyadh agreement which forms a significant step towards a comprehensive peace-based on the agreed references.

He explained that moving towards comprehensive peace on the agreed references will preserve Yemen’s national constants and assist at the state retrieval.

The three agreed references include the GCC initiative, the national dialogue conference outcomes and UNSC resolutions on Yemen.

He stressed on the importance of reorganizing all local militias in the government-held areas to be run by the government to ensure equal citizenship and activation of the state institutions, in line to the Al-Riyadh agreement.

He added that taking such steps can contribute at liberating other governorates that remain under the Houthis’ control.

He concluded that implementation of the President Abd Rabo Mansour Hadi’s directions on immediate implementation of the Al-Riyadh agreement will resolve roots of the past grievances within the state of rule.
