Government demands UN to stop illegal prosecution by Houthis

Alsahwa Net-The government of Yemen demanded on Thursday the United Nations (UN) to move and stop the Houthis-run illegal trial against human rights activists, journalists, members of the parliament and female activists.

This was pronounced by a letter addressed by the Ministry of Human Rights to the Secretary General of the UN, Antonio Guterres, the state-run Saba News Agency reported.

The government called on the UN to exercise pressures on the Houthis rebels to halt the arbitrary prosecution as the judiciary system in the Houthis-held areas lack independence and legitimacy.

It reaffirmed that the UN is obliged to the protect the Yemeni citizens in the Houthis-held areas in line to the UN Security Council ((UNSC) resolutions.

It demanded the application of the International Humanitarian Law that bans politically-motivated prosecution in times of wars as key terms for any UN-sponsored negotiations.

It warned against continuation of such illegal practices that disagree with the international law and disrupt the Yemenis’ trust in the UN.

It asked the UN to use its international power to pressurize for the release of all the illegal civilian detainees, abductees and forcibly disappeared people in accordance to the Stockholm agreement and the UNSC resolutions on Yemen.
