24 detainees tortured to death in Sana’a

Alsahwa Net-  A new government report released on Saturday 27 July 2019 said that the Houthis -affiliated militants tortured to death 24 civilians during the past year in private detention facilities in the capital Sana’a.

It noted that the Houthis manage 124 private detention centers throughout the capital Sana’a alone.

The report which was prepared by the Human Rights Office of the Capital Sana’a Mayor’s Office explained that these private detention centers are basically private residences and properties belong to anti-Houthis opponents that were confiscated by the Houthis following their takeover of the capital Sana’a in late September 2014.

It highlighted that illegal detainees were exposed to nearly 3,602 abuses in Houthis-run prions between January 2018 to July 2019.

Titled “death cells”, the report said abuses against detainees included enforced disappearance and torture to death.

24 detainees were tortured to death, 2,221 were abducted to unknown detention sites, 334 men were forcibly disappeared, and 918 others were severely tortured, according to the report.

It indicated that other 30 detainees might be killed at any time after they were illegally sentenced to death by a Houthis-run court in Sana’a early this month.

It called on international human rights organizations to act for saving lives of the 30 detainees who were illegally prosecuted over their anti-Houthis political activism.
