YJS: Hostility against media professionals continues

Alsahwa Net-The Yemeni Journalist Syndicate (YJS) said on Tuesday 23 July 2019 that it documented 62 abuses against media workers and press freedom during the first six months of 2019.

Documented abuses included murder, assault, death threats, confiscation of media equipment, torture, blocking of news websites, illegal detention of journalists and intimidation.

“The press work in Yemen during the first six months of 2019 was dangerous and complicated,” a report released by the YJS read.

Two media workers were killed, twelve others were tortured, 12 reporters were physically assaulted, and eight journalists were illegally detained during the first half of 2019, according to the report.

It is not a surprise that the Houthi-affiliated militants committed 63 percent of the total 62 documented abuses against media personnel and press freedom, the report highlighted

Yet, the government-linked military units were also responsible of 24 percent of the 62 reported violations that were committed against reporters and press freedom, the report noted.

The Saudi-led coalition has also a share of recorded intimidation against media workers in Yemen during the first half of this year with three percent of the total reported cases. Other unknown organizations were blamed for eight percent and one private organization was held accountable to two percent of recorded crackdown cases that were taken during the same period.

“These figures show that hostility continues against the press, reporters and media professionals amidst worsening living conditions of people working in the media industry,” the report cautioned “This is happening in conjunction with over four-year ongoing war that greatly brings bad consequences on the media workers and the media industry.”
