Houthis destroy 16 tons of WFP’ aids in Raima

Alsahwa Net- Houthis officials said on Monday  that their local authority in Raima governorate, northwest Yemen, has destroyed 16 tons of food aids claiming it is expired.

This coincides with the UN World Food Program (WFP) underway reversal of partial suspension of food aids distribution in Houthis-controlled areas taken by the WFP management on charges of systematic looting of food aids by the Houthis officials.

The destroyed food aids were provided by the WFP who suspended food aids distribution in Houthis-held areas late last June following accusations against Houthis officials of looting food aids.

However, David Beasley, Executive Director of the WFP said during a briefing about the WFP work in Yemen to the UN Security Council (UNSC) on Thursday 18 July that that the organization reached an initial agreement to lift the partial suspension of food aids.

Beasley gave no date to lifting the partial suspension and provided no details of the agreement they had with the Houthis. However, he indicated that the WFP responded to the Houthis’ demands to replace food- based assistance projects with cash-based aids.

The Houthis-mouthpiece Al-Masirah Satellite Television Channel said that local leaders of Raima and members of the Public Prosecution have witnessed destruction of 16 tons of food aids that were confiscated since May from private stores of aid organizations.

The destroyed food included wheat, cooking oil and other processed food, according to the Houthis-run Saba News Agency.
