Government: Griffiths ignores execution of 30 detainees

Alsahwa Net-The government of Yemen said on Saturday that its efforts for release of 30 detainees who were ruled to death by the Houthis rebels have not fruited yet.

Muammar Al-Eryani, Minister of Information, said that the UN Special Envoy to Yemen, Martin Griffiths never responded to a government request on the case to intervene for saving lives of 30 detainees that received a capital punishment by a Houthis-run court in Sana’a.

“Unfortunately, we received no response or even a condemnation of the death sentence against the detainees. We even have not felt any reaction by the UN Envoy to Yemen, Martin Griffiths to this issue,” said Al-Eryani.

A Houthis-run court ruled last Tuesday 30 activists to death for political charges based on their anti-Houthis activism.

Human rights groups including the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights have condemned the death punishment taken by the rebels.

“We are deeply alarmed by the imposition of the death penalty on 30 people by the Specialized First Instance Criminal Court of the de facto authorities in [Yemeni capital] Sana’a,” said Spokesperson of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ravina Shamdasani as quoted  in  press release on Saturday 13 July 2019 by the English News Website Middle East Monitor.

She called for dismissal of political-based charges and the application of fair trail in line to international standards.
