Thousands of mines cleared from Yemeni provinces in one week

Alsahwa Net- Masam Project of Landmine Clearance has cleared more than 2000 mines planted by the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in one week in a number of Yemeni governorates.

It is worth noting that Masam cleared over 63 mines which were hid in farms, houses and schools.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has reported that Houthi forces widespread use of landmines along Yemen’s western coast since mid-2017 has killed and injured hundreds of civilians and prevented aid groups from reaching vulnerable communities.

In a report, HRW spelt out that the Houthi used antipersonnel mines and anti-vehicle mines indiscriminately in violation of the laws of war, posing dangers to civilians long after hostilities have ceased.

It further said that landmines planted by the Houthis in farmlands, villages, wells and roads killed at least 140 civilians in Hodeida and Taiz including 19 children since 2018, asserting that these landmines prevented humanitarian organization from reaching population in need, left farms and wells inaccessible and harmed civilians trying to return home.

“Houthi-laid landmines have not only killed and maimed numerous civilians, but they have prevented vulnerable Yemenis from harvesting crops and drawing clean water desperately needed for survival,” said Priyanka Motaparthy, acting emergencies director at Human Rights Watch. “Mines have also prevented aid groups from bringing food and health care to increasingly hungry and ill Yemeni civilians.”
