Islah chairman, US ambassador discuss Yemen developments

The chairman of the Yemeni Congregation for Reform (Islah) party Mohammed al-Yadoomi and the US ambassador to Yemen Matthew Tueller discussed in Riyadh on Monday the latest developments in Yemen including in the western coastline city of Hodeidah and the humanitarian crisis triggered by the Houthi militia's coup d'état.

Al-Yadoomi reiterated Islah's support for the UN envoy Martin Griffiths' efforts to broker peace in line with the three terms of reference; the Gulf Initiative, the outcomes of the National Dialogue Conference and the UN Security Council's resolutions on Yemen, foremost of which is resolution 2216, which provides for ending the coup and retrieval of state-owned arms from the rebels.

Al-Yadoomi pointed out that the Houthis' rejection of all peace overtures has compounded the tragedy of the Yemenis.

Al-Yadoomi appreciated the US support for the Yemeni government and rejection of the Iranian intervention in Yemen, expressing his aspiration for more US support for the government so that it can secure its overdue national duties.

Tueller highly appreicated the role of Islah in pushing the political process on a permanent basis, stressing his country's keenness to end the suffering of the Yemeni people and support all political stakeholders to push for a political solution according to the agreed-upon terms of reference.
