Badi: Houthis looted 864 billion riyals last year, are responsible for unpaid salaries

The government spokesman Rajih Basi said the non-payment of public servicemen issue which Houthis often raise is their responsibility because they refuse to transfer seaports revenues to the country's Central Bank.

In a statement to Asharq Al-Awsat daily he said that the Houthi rebels' funds illicitly earned in their areas of control last year amounted to YR 864 billion ($ 3.45 billion), which was not transferred to the Central Bank. "This amount is sufficient to pay one year's worth of salaries to employees across Yemen," he said.

He added that the funds obtained by the Houthis in 2016 amounted to about 498 billion Yemeni riyals (1.99 billion dollars), used by the rebel militia to finance their years long bloody insurgency.

He said that the Iran-backed rebels are never serious about peace and this was evident even as the UN peace mediator Martin Griffiths' is making his first efforts to broker a political settlement in Yemen.

He said that the international community does not know the truth about the Houthi vandalist agenda in Yemen, and the danger of their armed movement.
