Health official warns of disaster because of Houthi objection to vaccinations

The Advisor to the Minister of Public Health Mohammed al-Saadi has warned of a major health disaster due to the Houthi objection to vaccination campaigns against infant polio, measles, cholera and hepatitis in their held north of Yemen.

"The problem is that Houthi refusal,  they (Houthi rebels) do not believe in immunization, so the children and the elderly in the areas controlled by them are vulnerable to a health disaster," al-Sharq al-Awsat daily quoted Al-Saadi as saying.

This came at a time when the World Health Organization and UNICEF announced on Thursday the launch of vaccination campaign against cholera in Yemen. The two organizations announced in a statement that the oral vaccination drive against cholera, the first of its kind,  will end on 15th May, one day before the holy month of Ramadan.

UNICEF Representative in Yemen Mirichael Relaino said that the vaccination campaign "comes at a very critical time, as children in Yemen were most affected by the outbreak last year and are still at greatest risk of malnutrition due to the high number of malnourished people Of children, and the deterioration of environmental sanitation and hygiene practices.
