FM: Iran is the cause of the crisis in Yemen

The tragic humanitarian situation that the Yemeni people are experiencing was imposed by the Houthi insurgency," Foreign Minister Abdul-Malik al-Mekhlafi has said.

In an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat daily, he said that "the Huthis are apathetic to the suffering of the people. They have also stolen humanitarian aid and delayed the entry of relief aid into the afflicted areas."

He added that the the United Nations staff have already presented a complaint to this effect (Houthi stealing of aid).

He said that the rebels have for a while been keeping 19 oil tankers away from entering the Red Sea port of Hodeidah and offloading their badly needed cargo.

"The situation in Yemen is improving through the efforts of the Arab Coalition, the Saudi government and the United Nations. There is a plan of action to improve the humanitarian situation. Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Kuwait provided an estimated $ 250 million during the recent aid pledge conference, " he went on.

He said that Iran is trying to persuade everyone to contribute to resolving the conflict, but its announced claim is only an attempt to ease the pressure on it by the United Nations to get out of Yemen and stop aiding the rebels."

"Everyone is now aware that Iran's intervention is an additional disaster for the suffering of the Yemeni people and that Iran cannot be part of the solution," he said.
