Taiz people face threat of imminent famine

The people of Taiz, Yemen's third largest city, are facing the threat of an imminent famine, an NGO has said.

Scope Center for Humanitarian Studies issued a report this week saying "the disaster of starvation threatens civilians in Taiz because of food insecurity, the collapse of the economy, disruption of basic services and devastation of infrastructure due to the war and siege that has been imposed by the Houthi militia on the city for more than three years."

The report which covers the rebel militia's abuses committed in the period from January 2018 to the end of March 2018 called on all humanitarian organizations for urgent intervention and mediation to broker the opening of a safe corridor to the besieged city so that people and humanitarian and medical assistance can get in and out of the city.

The report also called for an international intervention to end the indiscriminate shelling of the city and recruiting of child fighters and , to secure the release of all the people detained and forcibly disappeared by Houthis without justification.

The report said "the situation in Taiz is on the cusp of a humanitarian disaster due to the increasing rise in the prices of food, medicines, fuel and due to the sharp fall of the local currency Riyal's exchange rate.

According to the report, the number of internally displaced people in the province exceeds 400,000. The people were displaced from the city to the poorer countryside where no healthcare or decent shelter is available.

"The militia (in the three-month period) fired 270 indiscriminate projectiles killing 58 persons including 16 women and 15 children, and wounding 103 others."

The militia also destroyed more than 20 houses and partially damaged 66 private and public buildings, 35 buses and cars."

"The number of families displaced totaled 188 in those three months."

The report noted that the Mokha-based power plant feeding Taiz city was shelled by Houthis in 2015 and the city "has since been in darkness."
