UN envoy says peace should build up on Kuwait talks

The UN Secretary General's Special Envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh has said that any political resolution of Yemen's conflict build up on the talks of Kuwait between the government and the Iran-backed rebels.

The Kuwait talks took place in 2016 in Kuwait for 90 days before the rebels walked out of in the last minutes. Observers say the Houthi participation in it was a pre-meditated delay tactic.

Ould Cheikh pointed to the importance of building on those talks during a farewell meeting with Foreign Minister Abdul-Malik al-Mekhlafi. Ould Cheikh is going to step down by the end of this month.

He thanked the Yemeni government for its "positive reactions" to his peace proposals and affirmed that no armed militia can holds weapons and still claim to be a peace partner, according to the state-run news agency Saba.
