Scores arrested in Sana’a on anniversary of Prophet's birthday

Houthi militia on Saturday arrested dozens of people in Yemen’s militia-held capital, Sana’a, said former culture minister Khalid Al Rowaishan.

In a statement posted on his Facebook account, Al Rowaishan said in commenting on the arrests: “they arrested honey vendors on the anniversary of Prophet’s birthday; they have arrested dozens of them in police stations. Why only those are especially arrested?”

Only hours ago, he continued, Ali, a honey vendor, was detained from a district in the heart of Sana’a without reason.

To his surprise, he added that the same person was placed under arrest on the same day; on the anniversary of the Prophet's birthday.

“In Egypt, sweets and candies are handed out on the occasion of the Prophet's birthday while the opposite occurs in Yemen,” he said sarcastically, adding, “This is a great offense against the Prophet on the day of his birth”.

Thousands of Iran-backed Shiite Houthis today held a rally in the capital Sana’a to commemorate the birthday of the Prophet amid widespread discontent among Yemenis who think that billions spent on such occasion should have been used to pay the salaries of state employees who have been not paid for four months

On this occasion, the Houthi militia resorts to arresting whoever refusing to pay money to Houthis, fastening green cloth pieces in front of their shops and homes or chanting their anti-American slogan known as “the cry”.

Prophet Muhammad’s birthday is commemorated by Muslims during the month of Rabi' al-awwal, the third month of the Muslim calendar.

Prophet Muhammad’s birthday is also called Maulid Nabawi in Arabic, and is commonly marked by religious lectures and readings of the Quran.

But the Iran-affiliated Houthi insurgents, who took over the legitimate authority in Yemen on January 2015 with the support of ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh, has employed this religious occasion for political purposes.
