Alsahwa Net-The United Kingdom (UK) Foreign Office warned on Thursday against an imminent environmental disaster in the Red Sea due to potential oil spill from the Safar tanker, floating off the Yemen’s coast.
"The Safer tanker is an environmental disaster waiting to happen,” the Foreign Office said in a tweet.
It added that If no action is taken, around 1.14 million barrels of oil could be spilled into the Red Sea waters.
“Houthi Authorities must allow UN inspectors to access the ship and remove the oil,” the Foreign Office said.
The Houthis have been refusing to allow technical teams to maintain the tanker despite frequent international and regional warnings of an unprecedented environmental disaster.
The UN Security Council (UNSC) will hold on Wednesday, July 15, a special separated session to discuss the Safar tanker in response to a request by the Yemeni government, seeking urgent solutions to avert the disaster.
Yemen’s Foreign Ministry sent a letter to the UNSC, asking separation of the tank problem from the rest of political issues and demanding taking firm measures to avert a possible disaster.
