Military official: Large areas remain contaminated with Houthis’ landmines

Alsahwa Net-Director of the Yemen Executive Mine Action Centre (YEMAC), Amin Al-Aqili, said that large areas of Yemen remain contaminated with landmines planted by the Houthis rebels.
In his remarks he voiced during the meeting by state parties of the convention on the ban of personnel landmines, Al-Aqili affirmed that key areas of Yemen including urban centers and villages, roads, public facilities, farms and water sources remain contaminated.
He indicated that this contamination led to several deaths and injuries among civilians.
He explained that this continuation of this contamination led to huge economic and security challenges, yet the YEMAC has been implementing demining operations by support from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and other foreign governments that support the implementation of an emergency plan that accommodates the present security challenges.
He said that the YEMAC worked during the past period on disinfection operations and bringing new equipment to be used in the cleaning operations.
He added that the YEMAC continue operating despite low resources and the center is working on establishing two branches in Taiz and Marib.
He said that the center is also implementing activities on capacity building to prepare creating of an effective information management system based on a planned survey on the contaminated areas.
