Griffiths: Yemen peace talks to resume soon

The UN Envoy to Yemen, Martin Griffiths said in a press interview published on Thursday 11 July 2019 that Yemen peace talks will resume soon in line to the three references on Yemen without providing specific date.

Griffiths was interviewed by the London-based Asharq Al-Awsat Daily Newspaper and he spoke about the need to end the ongoing conflict through a comprehensive political agreement.

He said that Yemen could pay heavy price of possible regional conflict and that he would not allow this happens.

“We cannot allow that ordinary Yemenis to be victims of this tension. We need to deescalate now,” said Griffiths.

Griffiths said that he is still optimistic that warring parties can reach a peace agreement despite many challenges that hinder peace efforts. He noted that each day passes with no step towards peace increases suffering of the Yemeni people and that Yemen does not endure more military adventures.

However, he refused to name or condemn any party to obstructing peace efforts. He justified his position by saying that his job as a mediator requires him not to judge others, but to assist them to reach to an agreement.
