Mauritanian Foreign Minister, the former UN peace mediator in Yemen, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed stressed that his country sees any threat to the security of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf countries as a threat to Mauritanian national security and that they do not accept this in any way.
"The issue of Yemen has taken too long, and it is very difficult to continue this situation, and we believe that we must find a solution in this regard," Al-Sharq al-Awsat daily quoted him as saying.
"Mauritania's position is clear on this issue, and I can summarize it in three points: First, we in Mauritania recognize the legitimate government of Yemen, under the leadership of President Hadi, and we support this government to reach a solution to the Yemeni issue, and we reject anything that threatens this government. "
"As for the second point, we do not accept that any one may pose a threat to Saudi Arabia, the UAE or the Gulf states; any threat to them is a threat to Mauritanian national security," he added.
The Mauritanian foreign minister spoke about the role of international organizations in Yemen and how they support them, saying "the third point is our full support for the UN efforts to reach a peaceful solution within the general terms of reference of the issue; the UNSC resolution 2216 ."
